Escape Velocity brings an engineer’s lens to the space economy. Why engineering honesty matters

Every launch window missed, every propulsion system that underperforms, every market that failed to materialise - these failures share a common thread: the gap between what was claimed and what engineering reality allowed.

As capital flows into the sector and launch cadence accelerates, the volume of technical claims, market projections and strategic narratives is outpacing the capacity to evaluate them honestly. Press releases move faster than orbital mechanics.

Escape Velocity exists because that gap is widening - and because the cost of getting it wrong in space is not a failed sprint or a missed quarter. It is years of misdirected capital, teams built on assumptions that don't survive contact with physics, and missions that were never going to close.

The lens we use

EscV approaches the space economy through two simultaneous disciplines: engineering rigour and market intelligence. Neither works without the other -and most analysis in the sector applies only one.

Engineering rigour means understanding how things actually work - propulsion, structures, guidance, manufacturing, operations. It means asking whether a technology is at the readiness level it claims, whether its dependencies are real or assumed, and whether the path from prototype to production is credible.

Market intelligence means understanding the commercial and strategic context: where a technology fits in the sector, who else is building it, what the customer actually needs, and whether the business model can survive contact with revenue. Together, these two lenses produce something neither can generate alone - a complete picture.

What ground truth looks like

Ground truth is not pessimism. It is not reflexive scepticism toward ambition or a preference for caution over risk. It is the discipline of separating what is known from what is assumed, what is demonstrated from what is projected, and what is technically possible from what is commercially viable.

In practice, ground truth means reading primary sources instead of press releases. Understanding subsystem dependencies, not just system-level claims. Asking who has built this before, what they learned, and why this team will do it differently - and being willing to say clearly when the answer is: the cost structure doesn't close, the market isn't ready, or the technology isn't where the pitch says it is.

That kind of honesty is not comfortable. But it is the only foundation from which useful insight, credible strategy and well-placed capital can grow.

The space economy is not like other sectors

Standard investment and market analysis frameworks were not built for space. The timelines are longer, the technical risk is higher, the regulatory environment is unique, and the customer base is narrow. What works for software - fast iteration, cheap failure, large addressable markets - does not map cleanly onto orbital mechanics or satellite manufacturing.

That creates a knowledge gap. Capital is moving into the sector faster than the analytical tools can keep up. Many investors are applying consumer or enterprise software heuristics to deep-tech hardware companies with five-year development cycles, single-customer concentration risk and supply chains that don't yet exist.

EscV exists to close that gap - providing the technical translation layer between engineering reality and capital decision-making, between what is being built and what it actually means for the market, the mission and the money.
